It’s 72 hours since the Snowman Legend Middle Distance Triathlon and I’m still struggling to walk (mainly due to the DOMS)! After making the decision to not participate in the delayed Challenge Roth, I wanted a slightly different event…Snowman delivered!
The swim, at Plas y Brenin, started well! The eventual winner got away early, but I was able to sit in a pack of 6, which finished just over 60 seconds down. Swimming has always been my weakness, but some real consistency in recent weeks has helped me really improve here. Leaving transition I was about 2 minutes down on first place.
The bike was stunning! Taking in Pen y Pass, Llanberis, Beddgelert and Blaenau Ffestiniog, there were some tough climbs, but also some long descents to get the average speed back up! I rode the whole route solo, occasionally seeing first place in the distance…a nice carrot to have. Coming into transition I had closed to within about 30 seconds of the leader, and we had opened up a gap of nearly 10 minutes to third place! A quick transition, and I was out right on his heels!
The run was brutal! 8 miles (4 miles of out and back) on an undulating gravel and rocky path to start. Then a 2.5 miles run/walk/crawl straight up Moel Siabod (climbing over 2000 foot), finishing with a 2.5 mile descent.
Two miles into the run, after the leader had accelerated a few times to try and drop me, I thought I’d have a dig myself. As I went to go out round him…I tripped on a rock, and landed heavily on my left knee! After checking I was ok, he kicked on. Adrenaline took over and I was running again straight away! Looking down, all I could see was a nice hole in my knee and blood streaming down my leg. For some reason, I was more worried about the fact I may have potentially damaged my Tri-suit! At the 4 mile turn around point I realised how good a lead we had on everyone else, so pushed on! The climb up Moel Siabod was brutal (to be honest I think I’ve blanked most of it from my memory already), but it was the descent that completely finished my quads off! I hung on for 2nd overall! Over the moon with the result, and the fastest bike split of the day!
